Don’t worry. We’re here to help!
Assuming your stylist has taken the necessary measures to properly install your virgin hair (that is a conversation for a whole different day!), there are a number of responsibilities that quite literally fall directly on your shoulders post-installation.
After natural virgin hair is cut from the donor’s head, it no longer receives the natural nutrients from the scalp which keep the hair soft, silky and untangled. Proper shampoos, conditioners and hair care products will go hand in hand with your hair care tips as well, but make sure to keep all these pointers in mind to ensure that 8-inch virgin hair bundle lasts as long as possible.
It is important to always brush your hair before going to sleep, as well as prior to washing your hair. Over your day-to-day grind, it is easy for your virgin hair to develop tangles from wind, friction, sleep or any other daily rigors.
Although you should be brushing thoroughly prior to sleeping and washing, do NOT brush your virgin hair when it’s wet. This is when your follicles are most vulnerable and prone to damage.
2) Shampoo Once a Week
At least once a week is a good barometer to keep in mind for how often you should wash your virgin hair. You can wash more often if you sweat frequently or find yourself in a dusty environment. Curlier textures also would be wise to shampoo a little more often. Raw shea chamomile or coconut oil shampoos are some to keep in mind, and you can find a list of even more great virgin hair shampoos from Virgin Hair and Beauty’s site.
3) Deep Conditioning
A twice-a-month deep conditioning will keep your hair soft, and this tip is especially important if you have chemically treated your hair. Also, keep in mind that your scalp’s natural oils will do most of the work, so there is no need to go crazy with conditioning.
4) Avoid the Heat
Any high temperatures you expose your hair to will shorten the life of your virgin hair. This refers not only to hot combs or straighteners, but also water. Never go beyond lukewarm when washing.
5) Ever Hear of the Arctic Rinse?
When washing your hair, utilize the arctic rinse method in order to clean most effectively. All you need to do is either lower or detach the showerhead and aim the water onto the hair itself, avoiding the scalp. This will lock in the nutrients coming from the scalp while also ensuring the hair itself is rich and full.
You should also wash your hair in a gentle, downward motion with the palm of your hand, being as gentle as possible to avoid causing friction.
It will require some patience, but letting your hair air-dry on its own after showering will go a long way towards keeping it in tact for months on end. Using heat will dry your hair out, and towels will leave your hair a tangled, frizzy mess. Beautiful hair is a process!
7) Oil is Your Friend
A good Moroccan or coconut oil will help moisturize and style your hair. A couple drops a week applied evenly over the hair will do the trick. This should be done while the hair is still wet.
8) Put That Hair Up!
We’ve all been there. You’re too tired after a long night out and you just want to go to sleep.
Not before you put your hair up! Braids, pins, or a cap will prevent your hair from tangling in your sleep. You should also never sleep with wet hair if you want your virgin hair to last, so plan accordingly so you have enough time to air-dry before bed.
Hopefully you learned something from these tips to ensure your 8-inch virgin hair looks as flawless on Day 100 as it does on Day 1. Feel free to refer to this checklist if you are new to the virgin hair game, as well as other tutorials on our blog!
